ugaMIRACLE benefit concert 1 week from today!

Welcome back everyone! It's time to begin another year of amazing benefit concerts, and this one is right on campus too! Next Friday, August 27th, ugaMiracle is hosting a benefit concert featuring Pat Green at Legion Field! Doors open at 6PM. The concert will begin with Stewart and Winfield at 7pm and Pat Green at 8PM; tickets are only $20 at the door ($17 if you buy them in advance). Proceeds from the event go to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. So please please come out, reunite with friends for a good cause AND listen to some amazing music!

ugaMiracle is a completely student-run organization and is one of the major contributors to Children's Miracle Network, which benefits Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. This year will celebrate ugaMiracle's 15th year on the UGA campus; total funds raised equalling more than $2 million for the kids! ugaMiracle differs from many other student organizations because it independently provides for all the projects and events that it undertakes. It operates on a low-budget to make larger donations for the children. A large portion of the UGA student population is involved with this organization, and I encourage you to check out all of the events it will be sponsoring throughout the year! Check out the ugaMiracle facebook page for more information!

Back in the ATH and ready to serve!

Hello all! I'm finally back in the beautiful and charitable ATHENS!! This past summer was amazing. I spent all of May in Australia studying sustainability in human societies and the environment and then moved on to Fiji for a short summer session. I learned different methods that companies and societies use to preserve the natural environment and am now proud to say I live a more GREEN lifestyle. I've decided to start up my blog again to keep all of you 'do-gooders' updated about local charities, philanthropies, and fund-raisers going on in our favorite college town! So stay posted for some great events and news coming your way!

A Pre-Exam JAM!

Are finals stressing you and your friends out? Do you need to take a break for just one night before the storm of exams hits next week? Well the Conscious Alliance chapter at the University of Georgia hears your cries for help. This coming Friday, April 30th, Conscious Alliance is throwing its very first PRE-EXAM JAM at The Last Call in downtown Athens!

The concert begins at 10:00 p.m., so students can let back and relax before an entire week of finals. Performances by The Incredible Sandwich, The Hypsys, and Capsule Corp. are to be expected! Tickets are $8 at the door, but if you bring 10 cans of non-perishable food you get half off!

Conscious Alliance's vision is to "co-create a world through compassionate service in which all communities have equal access to food." And what better what to help the cause than to clean out your pantry before leaving for summer and attend an awesome concert!

Conscious Alliance is a non-profit organization "dedicated to raising awareness about hunger by reaching out to the art and music communities." Through its "art that feeds" motto, Conscious Alliance has held many benefit concerts all over the country to attract a larger college audience.

The organization was created in 2002 when a group of students came together with one vision as food drive volunteers. Their hope was to raise and donate food to impoverished Indian Reservations in the Western United States and raise awareness of the poverty that exists on Indian reservations today. Its area of distribution has now expanded to include all communities stricken with poverty and disaster.

Since its beginning, the Conscious Alliance has collected and distributed over 1,000,000 pounds of non-perishable foods to communities in need and local food pantries. The vision of this organization quickly spread from food drives to include benefit concerts.

So I encourage all UGA students to take a break from studying Friday night and make a trip to the Last Call downtown with 10 cans on non-perishable food to see the Incredible Sandwich, the Hypsys, and Capsule Corp.! What better way to relieve stress than by dancing to the original sound of these live bands!

Pink Ribbons Project Comes to UGA

Kelli Anne Born didn’t always know that breast cancer would be such an influential part of her life. But when her mom, Dawn Born, was diagnosed with the growing disease in 1999, breast cancer awareness became a cause she would passionately support and fight for to find a cure.

Kelli’s advocacy to battle against breast cancer began at a young age from a place embedded deep in her heart. Just months after their parents’ divorce, Kelli and her two brothers received the news that their mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer. From that moment on, at 10 years old, breast cancer awareness and a passion for activism would be a significant part of Kelli’s life.

“At the time, the only thing I could do was fight back,” reflects Kelli on the years after her mom’s diagnosis. “Each year my mom and I walked in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. It kind of became an annual tradition for us. That’s when I realized that each person really does make a difference.”

The Born family also found support and encouragement throughout Dawn’s sickness in two neighbors, Jane Weiner and Susan Rafte. The two sisters are breast cancer activists and founded the Pink Ribbons Project in 1995 when Rafte was diagnosed with the disease. The Pink Ribbons Project is a non-profit organization that raises money to help improve the quality of life by those affected by breast cancer through the fine arts.

“I really admired Susan and Jane for taking a different route to increasing breast cancer awareness in Houston. By bringing in the fine arts, their organization attracted crowds and crowds of people. I’ll always remember my first Pink Ribbons Event, Pink at the Brown. My mom and I didn’t know what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised!”

Kelli is now the founder of the first collegiate chapter of Pink Ribbons here at the University of Georgia. Her model of the student organization, if successful, will be taken to other campuses around the country to increase college students’ knowledge and awareness of breast cancer.

“Last year I wrote an action plan for the Pink Ribbons Project as an assignment for my public relations writing class. I thought Susan and Jane would appreciate it, so I showed it to them when I went home for winter break. I had no idea that they would love it so much,” states Kelli. “They said my action plan was exactly what they had been looking for: a way to reach the college community. And now, Pink Ribbons is an official student organization! We already have a pretty good membership base too!”

Pink Ribbons at UGA became an official student organization in January 2010 and already has over 20 student members.

“We just had a bake sale this past Thursday and raised over $250,” says Kelli. “I’d definitely say it was a success. Students downtown were more than eager to donate and eat our homemade brownies and rice crispy treats.”

The long term goal of Pink Ribbons at UGA is to raise money to benefit local underprivileged women with mammograms and increase breast cancer awareness among the Athens community. Kelli’s hopes for the organization are to educate men and women about breast cancer health and also develop strong relations with a hospital in Athens.

“We’re in the process of planning a Battle of the Bands Benefit Concert to kickoff next semester. All of our events will incorporate the fine arts just like the Pink Ribbons Project in Houston,” says Kelli. “Be on the lookout for big things from us!”

Kelli’s mom Dawn beat the battle against breast cancer and is still a devote activist. Her story of survival is an inspiration to all and especially Kelli.

Unfortunately, tragedy hit the Born family again this past winter when Kelli’s step mom, Lisa Born, was diagnosed with breast cancer too. Lisa is fighting the battle along side her loving family members and will hopefully win in the end. This heart-breaking news will only motivate Kelli further to ingrain Pink Ribbons in the UGA community.

Look out for the Pink Ribbons at UGA student organization next semester. It is bound to succeed because of the advocacy and passion that drives its cause!

AutismUGA Spelling Bee is a S-U-C-C-E-S-S!!

The second annual AutismUGA Spelling Bee held Wednesday, March 24th was a huge success! Many students and friends came out to watch the contestants attempt to spell words, have a good laugh, and support the growing organization’s philanthropy. The event was held at the location New Earth, located downtown on Dougherty Street. The hip venue created a great scene for live music from John French, drink specials and of course, raising money for autism research and treatment!

AutismUGA
is student run organization at the University of Georgia, and it is the first collegiate autism philanthropy in the South. Created in Fall 2008, AutismUGA’s mission is to increase awareness of autism and its effects, to serve the Northeast Georgia autism community through community outreach, and to raise funds to be donated to the local organizations, as well as Autism Speaks. With these three goals in focus, AutismUGA has already made a great impact in the lives of individuals and families affected by autism in the Athens community.

Executive Director of AutismUGA, Asia Bartlett, says that they are trying to keep the focus of this year’s bee funds local. She states that some of the money will go to the national nonprofit organization AutismSpeaks, but that the majority of it will be donated to the construction of a sensory room at the Barnett Shoals Elementary School.

One Saturday of each month, members of the AutismUGA organization participate in an outreach program called REAL Saturdays. The volunteers travel to the Barnett Shoals Elementary School to provide learning activities and play with autistic children while their parents engage in support groups. Through this program, the organization is able to work closely with local individuals affected by autism. The money the organization raises along with the funds it donates all positively impact the lives of those affected by autism in the Athens community.

AutismUGA’s Fundraising Committee works to raise funds for autism research and treatment all year round. Along with the AutismUGA Annual Spelling Bee in the spring, AutismUGA also hosts the Athens Walk for Autism. This year the event will be held Saturday, April 24th. Look out for more information on this blog about the upcoming walk and help support this influential growing organization!
